Nagarjuna’s N-Convention Centre Maybe Demolished

nagarjunaThe survey conducted by GHMC confirmed the exact detail of encroachment done by the N-Convention Centre, the high profile function hall near Hi-Tec City in Madhapur, promoted by Tollywood actor Nagarjuna. 3.3 acres of the 6.69 acres occupied by the Centre is public space – from the abutting lake. So half of the Centre is built on encroachment.

The joint teams of Revenue, Irrigation and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) completed the survey of Full Tank Level (FTL) of Tammidi Kunta on Saturday. Of the 3.30 acres encroached land, about two acres have been in the Buffer Zone, while 1.3 acres in the FTL level of the lake. The officials will report their findings to the Government. The GHMC officials will be serving a notice to the promoters of the centre on Monday, as per court directives which say notices are to be served before Govt. takes any action on the encroached lands.

The convention centre tried building regularization in 2010, but the corporation rejected the application as there is no supporting documentation establishing ownership of the promoters over the 6.69 acres. The owner reportedly submitted proofs for only 0.45 acres (2,175 sq yds). Also, there was widespread outcry over preferential treatment for the property’s regularization while many other properties in the same area were not regularized, despite proper ownership, due to the litigation over the Gurukul lands. So the application was rejected and then the promoters of the centre approached the court. The court just told GHMC to go in accordance with law, without getting into the specifics of the case. Despite all controversy over Gurukul lands in the last week, the promoters didn’t approach court and get a stay. This leaves the field open for GHMC’s action.

In a 2012 judgement related to Gurukul trust lands, the court said those who legally own land can get their properties regularized at a cost while no new properties can be allowed to be built in empty lots. As Nagarjuna can’t produce the ownership documents, the Centre could be demolished.

The brand new convention centre has three function halls with state-of-the-art infrastructure and technology. It has many venue options like official and social events. The function hall is hired for high profile functions of political leaders and cine stars. Till the other day, every leader, high and mighty, hosted and attended parties in the centre and today they are afraid to even look at it, considering the controversy around it.
