Telangana Survey Gets Massive Response; Makes History

The Intensive Household Survey, undertaken by the Telangana government on Tuesday, met with huge success with 95% of population, with 90 lakh households, getting covered in a single day. Survey in some districts like Warangal and Hyderabad could not be completed due to logistical problems. The State Govt Has empowered the district collectors to continue the survey on Wednesday, if need be, to complete the remaining locations.

95% of the population in the State was surveyed by 3.75 lakh enumerators across the State. Lots of myths got broken with regard to the State and Hyderabad’s populations and households. In Hyderabad, while around 88% of the population is surveyed, that already crossed 15.5 lakh in households, which was supposed to be the Hyderabad’s total number of households. To be exact, Govt records say population of Hyderabad was around 77 lakh with 15.82 lakh households. But with the survey figures, it is now revealed that Hyderabad population is now around 1.2 crore with around 20 lakh households. Hyderabad is already a megacity with over a million population.

The population of Telangana also has got updated figures now. While it was thought to be 3.75 crore till now, the survey revealed it could be around 4.5 crore.

Despite the big controversies created out of the survey’s ‘agenda’, people participated in large numbers. Reports came in that people traveled home from as far as Nepal to be surveyed! Lakhs of people came from out of state to get counted in the new State’s records. The underlying feeling is hope that the new State brings great benefits and welfare programs would be better than before and so people traveled all the way and took all the pain to participate in the survey. Many waited with bated breath for the enumerator to turn up and ask questions and when they did, they asked questions in return to make sure the enumerator is recording their complete data, without missing any detail. Many welcomed the enumerators into their homes and offered them with cool drinks and snacks, to mark the moment as an important day in the history of India’s 29th State.

Elated with the public response, CM KCR said , “This is a wonderful survey and unprecedented in the history of the country. The survey is a super hit. It is a an eye-opener even for the Central government.” The CM added that tough there was big propaganda against the survey to fail it, people, from Telangana and AP, hit back and made the survey a super hit. “The government expects the same cooperation from the people in the future in order to achieve Bangaru Telangana (Golden Telangana), “ he added.

The State Governmnet said that the survey is not only intended for welfare schemes but also for day-to-day needs like supply of drinking water, power etc. Planning will be changed as per the latest population figures and welfare schemes would be targeted to the needy and would be revisited. Also, schemes could be rejigged big time to directly reach the citizen by eliminating middle men and addituonal Govt. processes.

Besides Governor ESL Narasimhan and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, several other prominent leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, actor Junior NTR and Congress MP K Chiranjeevi, cooperated with the government and disclosed their socio-economic details.
