Fate Of Nagarjuna’s N Convention Centre To Be Decided Today

After demolishing 24 unauthorized buildings in Ayyappa Society on the land that belongs to the Gurukul Ghatkesar Trust, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), revenue and irrigation departments have decided to take up a joint survey of Tammidi Kunta (Cheruvu) adjacent to Gurukul land in Madhapur. The authorities said the survey and marking of Full Tank Level (FTL) of the lake is being taken up following allegations that some of the constructions including the one owned by actor Akkineni Nagarjuna came up on the lake bed.

Revenue authorities said the 20-acre Tammidi Kunta (Tummidipally cheruvu as per the revenue records) was encroached upon by some people following which a survey of all lakes in the entire Greater Hyderabad area was carried out by the revenue and irrigation departments. However, the marking of FTL and boundaries is yet to be done. Whether the structures came up on the lake bed can be established only when the boundaries are marked.

“If there are any encroachments in the FTL area after marking of the boundaries, the revenue department would evict them and the unauthorized constructions would be demolished by the GHMC. The marking of FTL would be completed by Saturday,” A Vidyasagar, tehsildar of Serilingamapally told TOI. GHMC officials said they would serve notices on N Convention and take action against the owner if the centre is found to be on lake bed and FTL area.

But actor Nagarjuna said he had bought the N Convention land from Gurukul Ghatkesar Trust in 1992 and got the property transferred in his name. “I applied for building permission immediately after I bought the land but the municipal authorities refused since the land was in dispute. In January 2008, I also applied to the GHMC for regularization of the building under the Building Penalization Scheme (BPS) which is still pending,” Nagarjuna told TOI.

Meanwhile, the GHMC sealed 11 unauthorized buildings which were completed but not occupied in Ayyappa Society. The corporation had demolished about 24 buildings on Tuesday and Wednesday. The corporation is also contemplating issuing fresh notices on 700 illegal constructions that came up on Gurukul Trust land.

GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar along with Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) managing director SAM Rizvi, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) managing director M Jagadishwar, Cyberabad police commissioner CV Anand and RR district joint collector Champalal inspected Ayyappa Society on Friday and decided to not to provide water and power connections to the unauthorized buildings.

Somesh Kumar said GHMC along with other departments would adopt a 10-point formula to prevent unauthorized constructions in Gurukul Trust land. This would include public announcements, setting up caution boards at various places on the trust land, marking ‘Illegal’ in red all the unauthorized buildings, demolition of ongoing constructions, reminder letter to TGSPDCL and HMWS&SB not to give power and water connections and disconnect the same if the connections have already been given, he said.

Meanwhile, some of the victims of Ayyappa Society met chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at his camp office on Friday and reportedly told them that they purchased the land with their hard earned money and were not aware of the legal disputes.
