Telangana To Use Southern Grid To Get Power From Chhattisgarh

After the discussions of Telangana Energy Secretary SK Joshi and Transco MD SM Rizvi with Chhattisgarh officials on Wednesday, there is now clarity on Telangana’s immediate plan to solve it’s power shortage woes. The state’s officials surveyed all options and have zeroed in on using the space that would be available on-off in the southern grid capacities, now being used by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka mainly. While Telangana is making purchase agreement for getting up to 1000 mw, the space available could be as little as 200 mw initially and Telangana would like to get started with that purchase quantity and gradually increase as and when space is available. CM KCR Deputes Energy Secretary To Chhattisgarh For MoU On Power Purchase

In continuation of the earlier discussion with Chhattisgarh, the Telangana state government has decided to finalize purchase of 1,000 MW of power from Chhattisgarh immediately, besides planning short-term and long-term power deals with the neighbouring state to overcome the power crisis in the new state. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who discussed power shortage and related issues with Transco and CMO officials on Friday, asked Transco managing director Rizvi to take immediate steps to obtain power from Chhattisgarh by entering into a memorandum of understanding with the Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company and into a PPA with the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCL) for lines. Chhattisgarh Agrees To Give Telangana 1000 MW For 20 Years

On Thursday, Govt of Chhattisgarh wrote to Telangana Govt agreeing to the latter’s proposal to buy 100 MW for the long term of 20 years. Right from Day 1, the Telangana Government has been pursuing it’s northern neighbor Chhattisgarh for a long-term power purchasing agreement. It is reported that 1000 MW of power will be provided by Chhattisgarh to Telangana at a very reasonable price as the PPA is for 20 years. However, it will take 2 years for the plan to materialize as new transmission lines have to laid between Wardha in Maharashtra and Dichpally in Telangana, about 270 km, to route this power from Chattisgarh. Telangana To Buy 1000 MW In A Power & Coal Partnership With Chhattisgarh

After purchasing 250 MW from Karnataka, Telangana is moving ahead with it’s plans to buy power and coal from Chhattisgarh in the long term. A visit planned by Suresh Chanda (Telangana’s Principal Secretary, Energy) 2 days ago, to Raipur, was cancelled due to the power emergency created by AP’s defiance in adhering to PPAs. Today, a team of Telangana officials visited Raipur and met with Chhattisgarh officials on reaching an agreement over buying power and coal over the long term of 25 years. Chhattisgarh, Telangana’s northern neighbor, has India’s 3rd biggest coal reserves and 2nd largest coal production. It has surplus power and is a key exporter of power to other States.
