SC Directs EAMCET Counseling To Be Completed By End Of Aug

The Supreme Court today directed both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments to complete the admission process for EAMCET by the end of August and begin classes for the current academic session from September first week. The SC referred the matter for next hearing on August 11, when it is expected to give the full judgement, on fee reimbursement and nativity norms.

The court asked AP & TS to insulate students’ education from the impact of bifurcation and refrain from politicising the matter. The court observed that the recent EAMCET notification be dealt in a special manner, as it came during bifuraction. The court opined that going by existing norms for this notification would be better for students’ future.

While the Telangana government has assured students belonging to the state that they won’t lose any opportunities, it would have to come out with a schedule to conduct it’s own counseling by August end with the newly formed TSCHE or go along with APSCHE’s schedule. Whether the TS Govt. would implement the new 1956 cut-off for scholarship eligibility would be clear after Aug 11, when the SC hears the case next.

MP Vinod Kumar said the state government would make its stand clear on counselling after the receiving a copy of the court’s order.

Last week, it had also issued orders creating Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), thus effectively bifurcating the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE). The TSCHE comes into effect from June 2, the appointed day of Telangana state.

The Telangana government could now argue that since the council had been established it would conduct its own counselling without deviating from the existing admission norms like opening 15 per cent seats to students of Andhra Pradesh in all the colleges in Telangana.
