IMA Telangana Ad-Hoc Committee Formed; IMA AP Unit Furious!

Fissures have started to appear in the State unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA), the representative voluntary organisation of doctors. The body was split wide open when on Sunday, several senior doctors hailing from Telangana held a meeting at the IMA building in Koti and formed an adhoc committee that will formalise the future course of action and formation of IMA, Telangana. sWhile this being the case, the office-bearers of the State-unit (parent body) of IMA on Sunday maintained that the meeting was ‘illegal’ and Central IMA observed elections to form separate bodies of IMA Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are scheduled to be held on July 12 in Vijayawada.

Senior nephrologist Dr. A. Gopal Kishan is the Chairman of the adhoc committee that will come up with future course of action for IMA, Telangana. The adhoc committee also has three convenors, including Dr. Dilip, Dr. Ramesh Reddy and Dr. Surendar Reddy.

“We will form sub-committees who will come up with our own IMA constitution and also on the modalities required to hold elections. We are also requesting the Central observers from IMA to be present in the elections. Where is the logic of going to Vijayawada for electing members of IMA, Telangana?” Dr. Gopal Kishan asked.

‘Illegal’

Meanwhile, senior official from the IMA State unit, N. Appa Rao said that holding such a meeting was illegal. “IMA elections are held once every two years and this year it is scheduled to be held in Vijayawada. The National Secretary General of IMA, New Delhi, is sending Central observers to oversee these elections. In these elections, separate IMA bodies for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will be elected,” Dr. Appa Rao said.
