Telangana To Release 3.5 TMC From Sagar After AP Asked For 10 TMC & CWC Suggested 4 TMC

Telangana agreed to release 3.5 TMC water to Krishna delta after it’s officials met with CWC Chiarman AB Pandya. Pandya met the chief secretaries of both the states and also held a joint meeting with the principal secretaries of the irrigation department of the two states before arriving at the quantum of water to be released. AP asked for 10 TMC and insisted it is all for drinking water. Telangana argued that drinking water needs within Krishna delta can be met by just 2 TMC of water and that AP is asking higher quantum to divert the water to irrigation purposes.  In the absence of fresh inflows into the Sagar reservoir, the priority goes to the drinking water needs before using for any other purposes, as per the CWC’s guidelines. So AP can not admit the irrigation needs without being turned down. Not too much water is left above the dead storage in Nagarjuna Sagar and even the mega city Hyderabad could get just 0.9 TMC for it’s drinking requirements. In fact, all through the year, Hyderabad manages all it’s drinking needs in 11 TMC while AP is demanding 10 TMC right away, which made matter complex. The file was pending with Telangana Government owing to this.

After the meetings, it became clear the 10 TMC is untenable and the Central Water Commission chairman A B Pandya asked Telangana to release 4 tmc over a period of one week beginning tomorrow. Telangana agreed to this in principle and it’s Irrigation secretary Aravind Reddy wrote to the CWC that they will release 3.5 TMC over 1 week, with maximum 6000 cusec release per day.
