Owning Singareni Collieries Could Trigger Uninterrupted Development For Telangana

The recent decision of the Telangana CM to buy the 49 % share of the Government of India in Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is to be welcomed. In 2012-13, SCCL had revenues of `10, 129 crore, realised a net profit of Rs. 401 crore and paid Rs. 140 crore in income tax. It paid a dividend of `86 crore and royalties of Rs. 3,500 crore to the State and Centre. It also owns Andhra Pradesh Heavy Machinery Corporation (APHMCL) at Kondapalli, Krishna. SCCL operations are spread across four North Telangana districts — Khamman, Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad — where SCCL is the largest employer. Telangana Wants To Buy Out Centre’s Stake To Wholly Own Singareni

The Telangana government is keen to acquire 51 per cent stake owned by the central government in Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL). Telangana, just like some other states, is reeling under severe coal shortage which it needs to overcome to be self-reliant in power in next 3 years, as per its plans. Owning the company wholly would mean Telangana gets full control over the coal it produces, which it can use for it’s own needs. Telangana government is exploring the possibilities of purchasing the entire shareholding of the Union government in the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to make it totally a state owned company.
