Prez Pranab Addresses 12th Convocation Of NALSAR

Pranab NalsarPresident Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday addressed the 12th annual convocation of NALSAR University of Law at Shamirpet on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta, Chief Justice of High Court of Judicature, Hyderabad, were present. In all, 649 degrees and diplomas were awarded besides 48 gold medals. Priyabada Das, a student, bagged 11 gold medals.

The President said lawyers were in a unique position to play this transformative role through offering inputs in the framing of legislations, leading cause-oriented litigations and engaging in social advocacy or research. 

“The shadows of our colonial past continue to play a predominant role in our thinking in relation to the enforcement of rules as well as adjudication of disputes. It is important to gradually rework the underlying principles to make administration of justice more representative and responsive to the citizens,” he said.

The President said while legal education had undergone a paradigm shift in the last two decades, there were still many areas that require further strengthening. He asked educational institutions imparting law education to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application.

Delivering the 12 convocation of NALSAR University of Law here on Saturday, he cited Granville Austin, the leading authority on the Indian Constitution, and remarked that the Constitution was the finest document to understand national integration, responsible democracy and to usher in social revolution.

Faizan Mustafa, Vice-Chancellor, presented the report, highlighting the achievements of students and the faculty. He said NALSAR’s choice-based credit policy had been well received.
