Owning Singareni Collieries Could Trigger Uninterrupted Development For Telangana

The recent decision of the Telangana CM to buy the 49 % share of the Government of India in Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is to be welcomed. In 2012-13, SCCL had revenues of `10, 129 crore, realised a net profit of Rs. 401 crore and paid Rs. 140 crore in income tax. It paid a dividend of `86 crore and royalties of Rs. 3,500 crore to the State and Centre. It also owns Andhra Pradesh Heavy Machinery Corporation (APHMCL) at Kondapalli, Krishna. SCCL operations are spread across four North Telangana districts — Khamman, Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad — where SCCL is the largest employer. After successfully engineering the transfer of the 7 mandals from Telangana to AP, claiming it to make rehabilitation measures easier for the people displaced by the project, AP is now claiming that Telangana has no stake in Polavaram project as the project is geographically no more in Telangana’s territory. 10000 Deaths Each Year, In The Country, Due To Unmanned Railway Crossings!

In 2011-12, Indian Railways recorded about 15,000 deaths. Experts say almost 70 percent of these took place at unmanned railway crossings. That is a staggering 10,000 lives and yet, incidents like the one today, in Medak, continue to happen. Today, dozens of schoolchildren died when their schoolbus was rammed into by a speeding train at an unmanned crossing. In India, there are about 13,530 such unmanned crossings. While the Indian Railways does not divulge the actual number of deaths at unmanned level crossings, a rough calculation can help us understand the gravity of the situation.
