Telangana Could Get An IIM In Future, Says HRD Minister Smriti Irani

The union minister on Monday said centre will consider setting up an IIM in Telangana in the future. HRD Minister Smriti Irani told Rajya Sabha on Monday that at present there is no proposal under consideration to set up IIM in Telangana. However, she said, the HRD Ministry is committed to setting up an IIM in states that do not have an IIM. So, the Ministry will consider setting up an IIM in Telangana. She said two separate requests have been received from S Venu Gopalachary, special representative of Telangana state in New Delhi, and Lok Sabha MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha to set up the institute in India’s 29th state.

In the budget, 5 new IIMs were declared for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra as part of the Modi government’s larger plan to have IIT/IIM in each state. Currently, there are 13 IIMs in India – in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong, Rohtak, Raipur, Ranchi, Tiruchirappalli, Kashipur and Udaipur. Considering 5 more states get IIMs as declared in the budget, there will be total of 18 IIMs. So there would be 11 States left without IIMs, including Telangana.

The HRD minister in effect says that the interested states among those 11, including Telangana, would be considered for IIMs. Excluding the smaller north-eastern states, there would be 3-4 states, including Telangana and AP that are interested in IIMs.

The total number of seats in the present 13 IIMs is 3335 seats. Considering a batch size of 120, the total seats could increase to almost 4000.

However, allocation of just Rs 500 crore for 5 new IIMs in the budget casts doubts over the seriousness of Centre in completing the plan. Setting up a single IIM costs nearly Rs 1000 crore!
