Naidu Welcomes Hyderabad Circular But Wants Even More Power To Governor!

CBN ModiAP CM Chandrababu Naidu wrote to the Centre welcoming the circular sent by the Union home ministry. The full text of the circular can be seen here. However, he is not completely satisfied and wanted more power to the Governor! In the letter, he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accord more powers to the governor so that he can appoint the police commissioner of the city. “The circular is in the spirit of Section 8 of the AP State Reorganisation Act 2014, but the governor needs more powers. He must have powers to appoint the police commissioner. And the commissioner is to report to the governor,” Naidu said in the letter. Earlier, the Modi Government issued the circular in response to a similar letter written by Naidu.

Meanwhile, Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has taken strong objection to the federal government’s circular. “This is a direct intervention in the affairs of the state government and curtailing of state’s power in violation of constitution,” he said.

The state’s minister for Panchayat Raj and Information Technology K. Taraka Rama Rao told the reporters in Hyderabad on Monday that the state would never accept or tolerate any such action by the federal government to take away the powers of the state. “Prime Minister Narendar Modi was a chief minister of a state till recently and he fully knows the powers of the states,” he said holding Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu responsible for the controversy. “Naidu still thinks of himself as the chief minister of old Andhra Pradesh. He should stop interfering in affairs of Telangana.” KTR added Naidu is a guest in Hyderabad and not it’s CM.

K. Taraka Rama Rao wondered whether Naidu had any stake in the properties on Gurkul lands, which were demolished by the Telangana government. And if that triggered this whole cry for giving additional power to Governor.

However the Telangana BJP president G. Kishan Reddy continued to support BJP’s actions. He said that the move to give law and order powers to the governor were nothing new and that they were part of the State Reorganisation Act passed by the UPA government. “When we objected to this at the time, the TRS said that achieving Telangana state was sufficient. Now they are blaming the BJP for this”, he said.
