Advantage Telangana: Hero MotoCorp Officials Visiting Today For Their 6th Plant Site

Hero MotoCorp is actively examining Telangana Government’s proposals to establish their 6th manufacturing plant in India, their first in South India. Hero MotoCorp, the world’s largest two-wheeler maker by volumes since 2001.

A team from Hero Motocorp is visiting Telangana today to visit a handful of sites apart from the main one – Zaheerabad. The other sites are reportedly in the industrial lands held by Telangana Government in Rangareddy & Mahabubnagar. However, Zaheerabad remains in focus for now as it has established manufacturing ecosystem with Mahindra manufacturing nearby. Telangana Government officials are cautious with details and optimism as Hero MotoCorp almost decided on Dharwad in Karnataka earlier but things fell apart in the final minute over several issues. Then, Hero asked Karnataka for 500 acres of land as well as additional land for for units to house its 40 vendors. While land is the major part, there is a equally demanding wishlist from the company to establish a plant. Telangana Govt officials are keeping their cards close for now. Today’s team from Hero MoroCorp would shortlist locations and another team from Hero would come for final discussions on several points, including power and water. The scale and size of the plant also could be decided after the discussions are completed successfully.

“We are looking to set up a plant in South India. It will be utilised to service the market there. We are scouting for land at the moment,” Pawan Munjal had told PTI some days ago. He, however, did not share details regarding the timeline for the completion. Currently the South Indian regional market is slightly dominated by TVS and due to this installation the company will not only register its presence in the market but also will save some crucial capital.

At present, Hero MotoCorp has three manufacturing facilities — at Gurgaon and Daruhera in Haryana and Haridwar in Uttarakhand — with a total capacity of 6.9 million units annually. It is set to commission the fourth facility at Neemrana in Rajasthan with an investment of around Rs 550 crore, thereby taking its total installed capacity to over 7.65 million units. The company is in the process of building its fifth facility in Halol, Gujarat at an investment of Rs 1,100 crore. The Gujarat plant is envisaged to have an annual capacity of 1.8 million units and is expected to go on-stream by 2015-16. So by 2017-18, Hero is set to have 9.5 million units of production capacity. The 6th plant is expected to add 2 more million units to Hero, taking the annual total to 12 million units, to let it continue the world No 1 2 wheeler manufacturer.

The Rajasthan two-wheeler plant to be started soon will provide direct employment to over 1000 people. In addition, Hero is building an R&D centre and a global parts centre there, providing direct employment to about 3,500 people in all 3 facilities with a total investment of 1300 Crores. It is this nature of expansive growth that is luring Telangana to offer competitive incentives to Hero. Upon CM KCR’s personal direction, Pradeep Chandra, Principal Secretary of Industries traveled to Delhi to meet  Mr. Vikram Kasbekar, Sr. Vice President of Hero MotoCorp to present Telangana’s proposals. Impressed by the offer, Mr Kasbekar initiated today’s trip. Other South Indian States, including Andhra and Tamil Nadu are interested in the project. AP CM Chandrababu Naidu even tweeted that he spoke to Hero’s Chairman Pawan Munjal showing his interest. AP reportedly presented few possible locations like Sri City SEZ.

    Shrawan,

Hero Motors is considering sites in only one State right now and it’s Telangana. As we reported in the story, other states made proposals too but they didn’t progress to the extent of discussing sites. While that in itself made some even in mainstream media call this a done deal, we were restrained enough, citing the Karnataka example; that Telangana just holds an advantage now. We stick to that.

  3. Defintely agreed, Telangana is in advantage in this case. Looks like the eco system is pretty positive after the new government.

We have to recognize that Hero was leaning towards AP 2 days back and now they are here in Telangana for site visit !!!!!! That itself talks about the positive efforts by the government which is not even a month and are competing with CBN led AP government and especially Tamilnadu which is already a biggest manufacturing hub with a port in South, the Govt definitely deserves an appretiation. Definitely Advantage Telangana and Good Job Govt !!
